The Center, formerly known as Morri­son Annex, has been a center of learning from its beginning.  Once called Cal­houn School, it was the grammar school for the African-American residents of the area.  When public schools inte­grated in the late 1960s, the school was renamed Morrison Annex and housed kindergarten and first grade for the inte­grated system.

      When Clemson Elementary School opened, the Annex closed.  The City of Clemson negotiated for a number of years to buy the property from the School District.  Once acquired, plans began for renovations and possible tenants.

      Today, the Calhoun Bridge Center houses the Clemson Child Development Center, The ARTS Center, and, eventually, the Clemson African American Museum. 

      The Clemson Child Development Center serves 77 children, ages 6 weeks to 4 years.  For 39 years, the Center has fulfilled its mission of providing quality, affordable childcare and preschool education for all children.  Currently, two-thirds of the parents receive some form of financial assistance.
