Larry Gahan, President
Larry is retired from Clemson University as an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. He has lived in Clemson for 38 years. He is a past recipient of the Clemson Chamber of Commerce’s Catherine Smith Award for community service. He currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board for Safe Harbor II and organized the Ministers' Cook-off to benefit Safe Harbor for the last three years. Larry is a member of the Leadership Clemson Class of 2005 and serves on the Board of the Clemson Rotary Club.  


Connie Powell, Vice President
Connie is trained as a Speech/Language Pathologist. She retired in May 2006 from Pickens County. She has had a long professional career working with special needs children ages 3-15. She is very active in the Clemson Methodist Church and served as a member of the building committee. Currently she serves on the church staff/parish relations committee. Connie joined the board in 2007 and is working on the committee to raise funds to equip the new 2-year—old classroom.


Donna W. Patterson, Treasurer
 Donna has been employed by Capital Bank for 13 years with a total of 35 years in banking. She has lived in Clemson for the last 19 years and has served as Chairman of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce, President of Rotary Club of Clemson-Calhoun, member of Clemson City Planning Commission and served on many other boards and committees. Her hobby is horseback riding and camping on the trail with members of the Pendleton Area Saddle Club. She is married to life-time Clemson resident, George A. Patterson.


Larry Allen, Program Committee
 Larry is Dean of the College of Health, Education and Human Development at Clemson University. Over the years, he has been an extension agent, recreation center supervisor and public school teacher. He has served as Chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure at Temple University and a chair of a similar department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has been actively engaged in community service since his arrival in Clemson in 1989.


Abraham Isham
Abraham is a retired public school administrator. He taught in the Cleveland Public School System for six years and held various administrative positions within the same school system for 31 years. He and his wife retired in 2002 and moved to Clemson. In addition to serving on the CCDC Board of Directors, he is also a mentor at Clemson University and a Teacher Supervisor at Southern Wesleyan University.



Malcolm Skove, Property Committee Chair
Malcolm is an Emeritus Professor of Physics at
Clemson University. He came to Clemson in 1952, and joined the Human Relations Council in the 1960s. He has an office at the University and works with graduate students in their research. Along with several other retired men, he has helped maintain the physical plant of the CCDC for many years. Malcolm is one of the founders of CCDC and donates freely his time and expertise—whether selling parking spaces during football season, solving computer-related problems, or installing kitchen cabinets!


Carl Ulbrich, Development Committee
Carl is a former Professor of Atmospheric Physics at
Clemson University. He is one of many members of the Clemson Physics Department who participated in renovating the original CCDC building 38 years ago. Although retired from active teaching, he remains active in atmospheric physics research. He served as one of the organizers of the Wacky Boat Race fund raiser.


Isaac Wallace, Secretary
 Isaac has been employed at Clemson University as the University Records Manager for 16 years. He also serves as Chair of the Commission on the Status of Black Faculty and Staff at Clemson University. He has a degree in history from Barber Scotia College, NC, and has done graduate work at Washington University in St. Louis. He serves as Chair of the CCDC Founders’ Committee which keeps CCDC historical records. Isaac has served as a volunteer in Big Brothers and Sisters in Nebraska and several other community groups. He is a musician and frequently plays organ in church.


Mellie Warner, Publicity & Development
Mellie Warner grew up in Clemson and moved back in 1980. She is an economist by training and worked at Clemson University in various positions for about 20 years. She is active at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, serving in numerous capacities over the years. She and her husband have two daughters in their 20's. She has a BS from USC and Master of Economics and PhD from NC State, all in economics.


Kathy Young, Education Committee Chair
Kathy has a degree in early childhood/elementary education from Clemson University. She taught for 24 years, 16 of those years were spent teaching and directing the Fort Hill Presbyterian preschool. She has also served as chairman of the board for First Baptist Child Enrichment Center.

Rosemary Bryan
Rosemary is retired from the School District of Pickens County after 22 years as library media specialist at Pickens Elementary school.  Prior to moving to Clemson in 1981, she taught kindergarten and worked in schools and libraries in Virginia, Spain, and Bahrain.  Currently, she is a library liaison on the Education Committee at University Lutheran Church, works in a local shop, and participates in various church and volunteer activities.  Rosemary served on the CCDC Board a number of years ago and says she looks forward to being involved in the Center's exciting future.

Subhash Anand
Subhash was born, raised, and educated as a civil engineer in India, a country I left almost 50 years ago to go to Germany for some advanced engineering experience.  He came to the US as a graduate student at Northwestern University, where he met his wife, Vera, who was born and raised in Brazil.  Vera also was a graduate student in civil engineering.  They have two daughters who attended all Pickens County schools.  Subhash taught in Sacramento, CA, and Chicago, IL, before coming to teach at Clemson University in the Department of Civil Engineering in 1972.  After 33 years of academic career at Clemson, Subhash retired in December, 2005.  He has been seeking to get involved in Clemson community activities as a volunteer.  He is looking forward to working with the most worthwhile work of the Clemson Child Development Center.

Marcia Barker
A native of Kingsport, TN, Marcia and her husband, Jim, have two sons.  After studying for three years at Winthrop College, Marcia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Georgia State University in 1972.  Marcia has taught 7th grade in St. Louis, MO, and kindergarten for 17 years.  Before beginning service as Clemson’s First Lady in 1999, she was Director of Fort Hill Presbyterian Kindergarten in Clemson.  She is currently Chairman of the Board of Fort Hill Kindergarten.  She also serves on the board of America Reads, Clemson University and on the board of the Friends of Lee Gallery.  Marcia was named an honorary member of the Clemson University Alumni Association in 2001 and was also made an honorary member of the Blue Key in 2001.  She received the Clemson University Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2001.

Lewellyn Betts
Lewellyn moved to Clemson from Chapel Hill, NC, last summer.  Her husband, Tom Mroz, is a professor at Clemson.  Lewellyn wanted a volunteer opportunity where she felt she could make a difference.  Fortunately for CCDC, she chose to join our board.  Her energy and enthusiasm for the mission of CCDC are evident by her commitment!  Lewellyn is an artist and also works with The ARTS Center.  You can find her up to her elbows in clay!  But, on Monday afternoons, you will find her manning the front office at CCDC as parents come to pick up their children.  Lewellyn has a lot of volunteer experience with numerous organizations in North Carolina and elsewhere which makes us happy that the family, along with beloved dog and cat, chose Clemson as their destination.  

LeRoy Williams
 Rev. Williams is the pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. He has a B.A. in Business Administration. He will receive a Master of Divinity Degree from Arsine Theological Seminary in May 2007. He has several years of experiences working with children of all races, ethnicities and backgrounds. He served as the Vice-Pole march for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and as the Mission Coordinator for Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. He is a member of the Baptist ministers Fellowship of Greenville & Vicinity and the NAACP. LeRoy joined the board in January 2007.
